>> reporter: just when they thought the worst was over, a new inferno overnight, 90 minutes west of los angeles. the maria fire sparking a wall of flames, forcing 8,000 to flee their homes. >> it just started, a very small corner then within minutes, it just expanded really quickly. >> reporter: from a distance, the time lapse capturing what looked like a blow torch across the hillside as wind fueled the flames, critical aerial assaults temporarily grounded due to unauthorized drones. the fire department tweeting "if you fly, we can't. so far, the fire destroying 9,000 acres. >> very frightening and humbling to know that your home can be destroyed and everything gone. >> reporter: out here, it's not just about protecting people's property and protecting people's homes. it's about protecting agriculture. we're seeing these dramatic water drops, and they are defending what is a lemon orchard. this lemon orchard is a major driver in this economy hundreds of millions of dollars worth of lemons, avocados and strawberries, exported all over the world, at risk

the power was out. >> reporter: high winds up to 70 miles an hour and heavy rain across the northeast, trigge tornado warnings and watches from pennsylvania to the carolinas. near philadelphia, roofs ripped off houses after a twister hit states of emergency in upstate new york, too. >> i know you notified fire, but we need to hurry up. the water is rising rapidly. >> reporter: flash floods trapping drivers and killing one man. crews saving this baby before the rushing waters swept her away not far from new york city, horror during trick-or-treat, 9-year-old. >> it literally fell on top of her and had her pinned until, you know, the police could get here to get her out from under it. >> reporter: back here in hard-hit madison, new jersey, crews spent the day restoring power and will be cleaning up damage like this throughout the

weekend. lester >> kathy park, thank you after all that, now the deep freeze 53 million people at risk. al roker, what's in store for this weekend >> lester, we're looking at some really cold temperatures stretching from the south, from 16 states all the way into the northeast. 53 million people under freeze warnings, frost advisories, we could see problems with plants out there. saturday morning temperatures, anywhere right within a degree or two of freezing, it's going to be a chilly one saturday jet stream to the south and temperatures anywhere from 5 to 20 degrees below average on saturday warming up just a little bit on sunday and we don't see finally temperatures getting a little more mild until the middle of next week. so bundle up and just hold on al, thank you. there is breaking news this evening in the race for president, a big name is dropping out peter alexander here, what can you tell us? >> beto o'rourke late tonight announcing he's ending his white house bid. this is a former texas congressman considered a

front-runner, making a big splash when he entered the race with "vanity fair" even featuring him on the cover last spring o'rourke nearly knocked off ted cruz in the 2018 race could not capture that same energy, that fundraising as the presidential candidate. his poll numbers have been in the single digits for months he was at risk of not qualifying for this month's democratic debate what is next for o'rourke? tonight his spokesperson says he will not be a candidate for senate in texas. lester >> peter, thank you. with that field shrinking, one of the leading contenders, senator elizabeth warren unveiling her long-awaited medicare for all plan today. the proposal coming with a big price tag would make sweeping changes to the u.s. healthm. andrea mitchell with details. >> reporter: leading in iowa, elizabeth warren today is putting a price tag on medicare for all. $20.5 trillion in new spending over ten years paid for by taxing billionaires and big business.
